Second order nonlinear interactions in semiconductor microcavities and photonic band-gaps

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We discuss two different ways of enhancing of second order nonlinear interactions in semiconductor microstructures. Firstly, the microcavity approach where a nonlinear layer is sandwitched between two dual wavelength Bragg mirrors. Secondly, the ID photonic bandgap where one of the two materials constituting a Bragg mirror is nonlinear. We experimentally achieve within these approaches an enhancement of the interacting fields due to a strong field localization. In addition, phase matching is obtained in both cases by a periodical rephasing (in the microcavity) and by the change of the effective refraction index near the band-gap edge (in the photonic band-gap).
