Abstract

Photonic band gap (PBG) crystals have been the object of intense investigation regarding the electromagnetic wave propagation phenomena at optical frequencies. Many practical applications of these structures have been suggested, at least in one dimension, for linear and nonlinear systems. We mention the photonic band edge laser, a nonlinear optical limiter and diode, an efficient nonlinear frequency converter, as well as linear optical delay lines and transparent metals. These devices are based on the physics of the band edge, where a fundamental enhancement of the electromagnetic field localization, group velocity reduction, and the availability of exact phase matching conditions make these devices extremely promising for both linear and nonlinear optical applications [1,2]. In this work we numerically study the modification of the reflective and transmissive properties of a one-dimensional (1-D) PBG doped with a χ(2) material, as pulses at the fundamental (FF) and second harmonic (SH) frequencies interact under suitable phase matching conditions near the band edge, in a parametric interaction scheme.
