Licenses for Journal Article Reuse

This page summarizes the various licenses that apply to Optica Publishing Group journal content for the purposes of reuse. Our journal articles are published under a variety of licenses, and specific publication rights have been granted by the authors of the published articles.

More descriptive information about our Copyright Transfer and Licensing Agreements can be found at the links below and here.

Optica Publishing Group Default License for Publisher-Formatted Journal Article PDFs (Versions of Record)

Unless explicitly licensed for use under a different license, the final formatted journal article PDF (Version of Record) is governed by the Optica Publishing Group Copyright Transfer Agreement signed by the author and any applicable copyright laws. If published within a subscription journal, access is further covered by the terms and conditions for using our online journals and our subscriber agreements. One print or electronic copy may be made for personal use only. Systematic reproduction and distribution, duplication of any material in this paper for a fee or for commercial purposes, or modifications of the content of this paper are prohibited.

Optica Publishing Group Default License for Accepted Manuscript PDFs

Unless explicitly licensed for use under a different license, the Optica Publishing Group Copyright Transfer Agreement applies to the Accepted Manuscript PDF as well. For articles made publicly accessible through CHORUS, the Accepted Manuscript PDF will be made publicly accessible to nonsubscribers following the embargo period set by each agency.

Optica Publishing Group Open Access License for Publisher-Formatted Journal Article PDFs (Versions of Record)

Open access journal article PDFs may be governed by the Optica Publishing Group Open Access Publishing Agreement signed by the author and any applicable copyright laws. Authors and readers may use, reuse, and build upon the article, or use it for text or data mining without asking prior permission from the publisher or the Author(s), as long as the purpose is non-commercial and appropriate attribution is maintained.

Optica Publishing Group Open Access License for Accepted Manuscript PDFs

The Optica Publishing Group Open Access Publishing Agreement applies to the Accepted Manuscript PDF as well.

Optica Publishing Group Non-Exclusive License

The Optica Publishing Group Non-Exclusive License is used for the preprint server, Optica Open. It gives Optica Publishing Group perpetual, non-exclusive rights to distribute the preprint and allows broad reuse for any lawful purpose.

Creative Commons Licensing

Some authors, as a condition of their funding, must publish their work under a Creative Commons license. We therefore offer a CC BY license for authors who indicate that their work is funded by agencies that we have confirmed have this requirement. Authors must enter their funder(s) during the manuscript submission process. At that point, if appropriate, the CC BY license option will be available to select for an additional fee.

Works by Employees of the U.S. Government and Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, and United Kingdom Crown

Works authorized exclusively by employees of the U.S. Government and the Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, and United Kingdom Crown may not be subject to copyright. However, access to those articles published in our subscription journals is by subscription only and is subject to the terms and conditions for the usage of our online journals and our subscription agreement.

Questions regarding Licensing can be directed to copyright@optica.org.
