Abstract

A cryostat with a wedge-shaped sample cell has been used for refractive-index measurements of liquids in the temperature range 130–260 K. Results obtained with the 6328-Å line of a helium-neon laser on eight liquids (NH3, SO2, H2S, HCl, HBr, OCS, N2O, and Cl2) are presented; the temperature variation of the refractive indices is found to be linear over the liquid range of these samples. Values of the molecular refractivity calculated from these data are in good agreement with estimates from the gas phase, showing that intermolecular effects on the polarizability are small.
