Abstract
Brillouin spectra of eight low-temperature liquids (NH3, SO2, H2S, HCl, HBr, OCS, N2O, and Cl2) have been obtained by using 6328-Å excitation from a helium-neon laser and a pressure-scanned Fabry–Perot interferometer. From these measurements and values of the refractive index and density, the hypersonic velocity and adiabatic compressibility and their variation with temperature over the liquid range are calculated. The velocity data are analyzed in terms of the law of corresponding states, and effective values of the Lennard–Jones parameter ∊ for the eight molecules are thus derived. The temperature dependence of the Brillouin intensities is also briefly discussed.
