7. Writing the Review

Finalizing Your Review

Proofread Your Review

After completing your critique, re-read it.

  • Check your spelling and grammar.
  • Ensure that all of your critiques are professional and focused on particular flaws in the manuscript, not the authors themselves.
    • For example: Do NOT include phrases such as “The authors don’t know what they are talking about regarding…”
  • Ensure that your critiques are specific, giving direct quotations or individual figures.
    • For example, cite specific figures that have issues, rather than mentioning “multiple figures” or “several figures”
  • Support all critiques with evidence.
    • For example, if you are stating that a result is not novel, provide the reference where it was presented previously
  • Pair each critique with a recommendation for how the authors can address the issue.

Supported vs Unsupported Critiques
