Piezomagnetism and excitons in the CdTe/Cd(Mn)Te quantum well system

Abstract

In a semimagnetic semiconductor (SMSC) such as Cd(Mn)Te, the Mn gives rise to local moments of spin 5/2, arid there is both a coupling between the local moments (within the Mn subsystem) and a coupling between optically generated carriers and the local moments (sp-d coupling). At low concentrations of Mn (x ≲5 0.10), the sp-d coupling dominates, giving rise to magnetic polarons, leading to giant Faraday rotations and giant Zeeman splittings in a magnetic field. This is because of the alignment of carrier spins and Mn spins. At higher Mn concentrations (x ≳ 0.3), photoluminescence in Cd(Mn)Te shows a peak at a temperature Tg, which has been identified from susceptibility measurements as the spin glass (or some other magnetic ordering) temperature.
