Abstract
ZrF4 based glasses have received great attention, mainly due to their potential transmission properties in the 1 μm to 4 μm wavelength region, suggesting uses in ultra-low-loss optical fibers (1). Recent improvements in such fiber waveguides have resulted in the realization of fibers with attenuation under 5 dB/km (2) (3). On the other hand, because such fluoride glass fiber transmits light in the near-to middle-infrared range, it is expected to find applications in radio-thermometers capable of measuring lower range temperatures than is possible using silica fiber.
