Abstract

The near-term emphasis on potential windows for low-loss fluoride glass fibers has been directed toward the 2.55-μm wavelength region where optical losses are expected to be at most 10−2 dB/km.1 OH-absorption signatures obtained from dry fluoride glass fibers indicate that the loss contribution due to OH is expected to be < 10−2 dB/km at 2.55 μm2 ; and scattering loss coefficients obtained for fluoride glasses directly at 2.55 μm are as low as 10−2 dB/km.3
