Abstract
Optical transmission systems of up to 2.4 Gbit/s are now commercially available, and current research is striving for 10 Gbit/s and higher speeds. IC technology for such very high-speed optical transmission systems is faced with design considerations which previously could be neglected at speeds of 2.4 Gbit/s and below. This paper discusses key design considerations unique to very high-speed IC-based optical transmitters and receivers. These considerations include IC processing, circuit configuration, interconnection with optical components, and packaging. These factors are closely interrelated and must be carefully considered in the overall design effort.
