Abstract

To make photonic integrated circuits (PICs) which include gain, the switches and modulators used for signal processing must be compatible with semiconductor laser materials and fabrication. In addition, large scale PICs require each device to be small. Most waveguide switches and modulators based on electrorefraction in bulk semiconductors are several millimeters long.
