Abstract
Recent papers have described the development of fiber-optic transmitters and receivers for point-to-point applications operating in the 1-Gbit/s range and beyond. Many of these systems have been used to establish new high-bit-rate long-distance records.1 In most cases custom silicon or gallium arsenide (GaAs) integrated circuits were developed for these new applications.
