Abstract

The use of fiber optics in high-capacity local area networks introduces some special concerns not found in point-to-point data transmission systems. These concerns include fast response to burst mode data, minimizing background light from nonoperating transmitters, wide dynamic range in receivers and efficient data coding, and protocols for high-bit-rate operation. We describe a network system for 200-Mbit/sec operation that incorporates novel opto-electronic and system designs which address these concerns.
