Abstract

During the last few years we have witnessed the penetration of optical fiber communication technology from long-haul telecommunications into local area network (LAN) and subscriber loop applications. However, most electronic-optical interface and terminal equipment developed for telecommunications cannot be used directly tor LAN and loop applications. The optical regenerators for terrestrial telecommunications tend to be bulky and expensive.1
