Effect of Gain and Index Nonlinearities on Modulation Characteristics of a Three-Section DBR Laser

Abstract

The effects of gain and index nonlinearities on modulation characteristics in a three-section DBR laser are investigated theoretically. It is found that the nonlinear gain has influenced the FM/IM response and the CPR (chirp to modulation power ratio), while the index nonlinearity affects only the FM efficiency, the FM phase and CPR to a certain degree. The comparisons between the results of the present work and those of a phenomenological nonlinear gain model are shown and discussed.
