Abstract

Three-section DBR lasers are attractive candidates for multiwave-length network applications due to their wide quasicontinuous wavelength tunability (~10 nm) and potential for fast wavelength switching. However, the nonlinear dependence of the wavelength on the injected currents in the passive phase control and Bragg regions (Ip and IDBR) produces a complex 2-D tuning pattern.1,2 Much attention has, therefore, focused on the simpler continuous tuning of a single lasing mode with a fixed ratio of Ip to IDBR- We report here a new strategy for quasicontinuous tuning, present an important special case with single current control, and demonstrate fast wavelength switching (<15 ns) over 4 nm.
