Transonic flow in an optical analogue of the Laval nozzle

Abstract

We study the flow through an optical Laval nozzle by launching a laser beam into a suitably shaped waveguide with Kerr-type defocusing nonlinearity. The experimental design lends itself to laboratory experiments on black hole physics.
