Abstract

We review recent progress in the development of alexandrite laser technology placing particular emphasis on the relationship between alexandrite’s material properties, laser physics, and the performance of high average power solid-state lasers. Recently, significant improvements in laser performance have been achieved through a better understanding of alexandrite’s laser physics. This work has provided important insights into the design of strongly pumped, low cross-sectional lasers.
