Abstract
Transient stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is traditionally described in terms of a set of quasi-CW waves representing the pump, Stokes and anti-Stokes radiation [1]. There are, however, a number of situations in monomode optical fibres where such a description cannot be applied. Two examples are the secular shift in the frequency of solitons [2], [3], and the soliton-Raman generation of ultrashort pulses [4], [5]. The frequency shift is due to the self interaction of the pump spectrum with its own Raman gain band leading to an overall change of the pulse frequency. The soliton-Raman process starts with a modulation instability of the pump which generates radiation within the Raman gain band, this radiation is then amplified by the Raman band and ultimately fills the spectral region between the pump and Stokes frequencies.
