Investigation of transient stimulated Raman scattering in lead vapor

Abstract

Conversion efficiencies for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in Pb vapor are strongly influenced by the buffer gas pressure and species employed in the Pb vapor heat pipe. As the Raman gain is proportional to the Pb density and to the transient response time T2, changes in performance can be caused by variations in either of these parameters. To resolve this issue we have undertaken a new form of delayed probe experiment to monitor the effects of variations in T2 independent of changes in the Pb density. We observed the pressure dependence of T2 for the Pb system in He, Ar, and Xe buffer gas species over the temperature range of 1120-1300°C. The buffer gas pressure/species dependence of Pb density has also been observed using ground state optical absorption.
