Abstract

Since the first observation of solitons in stimulated Raman scattering (SRS),1 several groups2,3 have reported the theory of soliton initiation and formation in SRS and four-wave mixing. These studies found that solitons were generated as an anomalous reversal of pump depletion due to a π phase shift in a Stokes seed pulse. On the other hand, Englund and Bowden4 predicted that solitons would be induced spontaneously by large phase shifts of the Stokes wave during quantum initiation of SRS. However, no experimental observation of spontaneously generated solitons has been reported. We present the observation of spontaneous generation of solitons in SRS and discuss the origin of the Stokes phase shift.
