Coherent control of spontaneous emission in a four-level atom

Abstract

We consider ‘coherent phase control’ [1], where the interaction dynamics of multiphoton transitions are determined by the relative phase between the applied laser fields driving the transitions. In particular we realize phase control in a four level system (open V-type system) (fig. 1). This system is similar to that studied by Scully. Zhu and coworkers [2] except that we use two lasers with frequencies ωa, ωb rather than one for the coupling of the ground state with the excited states. These laser fields may be distinguished by their different transition characteristics. The use of two lasers makes the system independent of any restrictions involving the matrix elements for the satisfaction of the important trapping conditions. This is not the only advantage of this system.
