Phase control of a two-channel ionization system

Abstract

We consider “coherent phase control,”1 where the interaction dynamics of multiphoton transitions are determined by the relative phase between the applied laser fields driving the transitions. In particular, we realize phase control in a two-channel ionization atomic system (V-laser-induced continuum structure-like system)2 (Fig. 1). We use four lasers for the excitation and ionization and assume that the laser frequencies are fixed such that the two different routes of excitation and ionization reach the same energy state in the continuum. These two channels will undergo quantum interference, which is crucially dependent on the relative phase of the four lasers δϕ = ϕa + ϕc - ϕb - ϕd. This system allows the possibility of population trapping, which may be controlled through the relative phase δϕ.
