Abstract

The phenomenon of excess quantum noise admits a variety of different definitions and interpretations. On the one hand, the excess noise (Petermann) factor for a laser mode $u_{n} (\underline{r})$ can be defined as where $v_{n} (\underline{r})$ is the adjoint of $u_{n} (\underline{r})$ .
