Abstract

The optical and collisional behavior of the diatomic rare gas ions (and Xe2+ and Kr2+, in particular) is of considerable interest due to the varied roles these ions play in lasers and gas discharges. Frequently, these ions are the precursors to the particular atomic or molecular species of interest. Unfortunately, of the few techniques that are available for detection of molecular ions, most (such as mass spectrometry) are incapable of time resolution.
