Abstract

Mutually coupled semiconductor lasers (SL) exhibiting a delay in the optical coupling are not only of great interest for communication schemes based on the synchronization of chaotic SLs, but also represent the first experimental realization of nonlinear delay-coupled oscillators. This system might be of fundamental relevance for Nonlinear Dynamics studied in many different research disciplines. In particular, mutually delay coupled SLs exhibit sub-nanosecond coupling-induced synchronized chaotic dynamics, and a remarkable conjunction of symmetry breaking and chaos synchronization, both resulting from the delay present in the coupling [1].
