Abstract
Despite convincing technical advantages, surface treatment with lasers has found only a very limited number of industrial applications, up to now. The comparison with competing conventional methods on the one hand and with more successful laser techniques on the other hand shows inherent weaknesses:
• low coupling efficiency,
• low thermal efficiency,
• inappropriate use of expensive heat sources.
