Abstract

Spot-size converters (SSCs) are indispensable for matching the spot-size of semiconductor laser diodes (LDs) with passive guides such as optical fiber. LDs monolithically integrated with SSCs having no need for sophisticated lens systems are believed to be promising,14 because matching can be achieved with large alignment tolerance at relatively low cost and good compactness. Such devices should be fabricated on larger scale substrates with good uniformity and reproducibility at high fabrication yield, so that they can be widely implemented in coming advanced optical networks.
