Abstract

The vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays are promising for ultrahigh capacity optical networks using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) [1-4]. In this paper, we demonstrate multi-wavelength VCSEL arrays with the largest wavelength span using a backside-patterned GaAs substrate to create a growth gradient. An location-resolvable in-situ optical calibration technique is used, for the first time, to control the wavelength limits and span.
