Abstract
Solid state Ti:Al2O3 lasers have recently attracted much attention because of their operating wavelength, wide tunability, high efficiency, and simplicity. With improvements in available material, flashlamp pumping of Ti:Al2O3 has become a viable technique for pumping these devices. Output energies of 1-5 J in pulse lengths of 8-30 μs at efficiencies of 1-2% have been reported.1 Our focus was directed toward the use of flashlamp pumped Ti:Al2O3 lasers for amplification of the output from a single-longitudinal-mode tunable pulsed Ti:Al2O3 oscillator.2 For short pulse extraction it is desirable to excite the Ti:Al2O3 on a time scale much shorter than its 3.2-μs radiative lifetime to minimize losses due to nonstimulated processes. We report on a flashlamp pumped Ti:Al2O3 laser designed to operate at the 5-10-J level when excited by short current pulse (2-μs FWHM) flashlamps.
