Abstract

Using external resonant optical feedback,1 we reduced the spectral linewidth of a 10-mW AlGaAs semiconductor laser from its free-running value of 20 MHz to <1 kHz, providing a coherence length of over 100 km. We have employed an all-fiber optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer2,3 to simulate the effects of laser phase noise on high precision ladar SNR. Using this interferometer with a 1.1-km optical fiber, we measured a phase noise limited SNR of 50 dB in a 1-kHz resolution bandwidth.
