Frequency tracking twin-channel waveguide lasers

Abstract

An array of rf excited waveguide lasers provides the means of producing independent laser sources whose frequencies naturally track to high accuracy, since the sources share the same gas envelope and gas fill, resonator support structure, rf power source, and different areas of the same cavity mirrors. We have previously shown that the passive stability of the interchannel frequency differences of an array is extremely good1 and that control of frequency is obtained is obtained by mirror tilting. Here we present a two-channel array system with active locking of the difference frequency to a tunable electrical oscillator, giving further improvement in stability and rapid control of the offset. It is expected that the twin-channel source will find applications in lidar, remote sensing, spectroscopy, and metrology.
