Abstract

Nonlinear optical pulses can propagate in optical fibers in the form of bright and dark solitons in certain conditions.1 The characteristics of bright solitons have been studied extensively during the last decade.2 Recently, there has been success in observing dark solitons in single-mode fibers.3 We study the stability of dark solitons when the fiber loss and input noise are taken into account. It is shown that the dark pulses are more stable than the bright pulses in terms of pulse width and shape.
