Observation of modulation instability oscillation in a colliding pulse mode-locking dye laser

Abstract

Ultrashort optical pulse trains with ultrahigh repetition rates are needed for the future generation of optical signal processing systems and optical communications networks. Pulses with up to 10TH repetition rates have been obtained by single pass modulation instability in single-mode optical fibers.1,2 Pulses with a 3-TH repetition rate have been obtained by modulation instability oscillation in a synchronously pumped optical fiber ring cavity.3 We report on the first observation of modulation instability oscillation in a colliding pulse mode- locked dye laser.
