Abstract

The Atmospheric Lidar Observatory at the University of Maryland is now making observations in the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesophere, Mie scattering in the troposphere is utilized for various studies including depolarization by cirrus clouds, morphology of cirrus and tropospheric haze and clouds, and rapid variations of the cloud-free line of sight. Rayleigh scattering from the middle atmosphere is employed for temperature and density profiling in the 30-70-km altitude range, where scattering by aerosols is usually negligible.1
