Two lidar systems for atmospheric measurements in Antarctica

Abstract

Two lidar systems are described which are designed to operate in Antarctica for atmospheric and climatological research under the Italian National Program for Antarctic Research (PNRA). The first is an elastic backscattering lidar for aerosol and polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) distribution measurements in the stratosphere and cloud distribution and physical state monitoring.1,2 This system worked during the Antarctic summer from Dec. 1987 to Feb. 1988 at the Italian base at Terra Nova Bay, 74°41′ lat S and 164°07′ long E and is actually operating at the French base of Dumont d'Urville for a year's campaign of measurements.
