Observation of self-sustained pulsations from a highly coherent channeled substrate planar diode laser array

Abstract

We have observed regular self-pulsations in the output of eight-element laterally coupled channeled substrate planar (CSP) diode laser arrays [structure shown in Fig. 1(a)] that were operated in dc conditions.1 The pulse frequency could be varied in a controlled manner by varying the level of the injected dc. Interestingly, these arrays operated in a pure out-of-phase (180°) spatial mode and exhibited almost total spatial coherence (>90%) over their lateral extent,2 and the temporally periodic pulsed output from all elements was synchronous across the entire array.
