Instabilities in SES phase conjugate fidelity at high pump Intensities

Abstract

To identify a regime in which the best possible performance is obtained from an SBS phase conjugate mirror, the dependence of the phase conjugate fidelity on a variety of experimental parameters must be established. We have observed a systematic increase in the shot-to-shot variation of the conjugate fidelity as the pump intensity increases beyond ~10 times SBS threshold. This behavior occurs with either simple focusing into a bulk SBS medium, or Imaging into a lightguide, and is observed using various aberration strengths, input optics f/Nos., and nonlinear media. Clearly, in these operating conditions, a limited dynamic range exists over which the SBS phase conjugate mirror produces consistently good fidelity.
