Stimulated Brillouin scattering and phase conjugation with a multiple line hydrogen fluoride laser

Abstract

There is considerable current interest in the effect of pump laser bandwidth on the reflection efficiency and the phase conjugate fidelity of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). For broadband or narrowband single line sources, recent experiments appear to agree qualitatively with theoretical predictions1 that narrowband conditions prevail when either lcoh > cτph or Icch > Ii, where Icoh is the coherence length of the laser source, c is the speed of light, τph is the characteristic phonon lifetime, and Ii is the SBS interaction length. The situation is somewhat unique in the present study in which we generate simultaneous multiple line SBS from the same focal volume in the Brillouin medium.
