Abstract

High repetition rate, high power laser sources are desired for applications in many areas including photonic switching, optical computing, and high speed electronic circuit testing. Semiconductor lasers have been the first choice for high speed communication uses. However, they do not possess the power in a single focusable beam that is required for highly parallel photonic switching systems. High power solid state and gas lasers which are run at a high repetition rate are generally mode-locked using an acoustooptic modulating crystal. These systems have been limited to 100-200-MHz repetition rates. We present here a new laser design which mode locks a Nd:YAG laser at 0.5 GHz with high average power.
