In some optical logic concepts waveguides provide required optical signal delays between stages. Transit times or group delays must, therefore, be specified and measured. A relatively simple interferometric technique is reported for determining the transit time through single-mode optical fibers up to 4 m In length or ~20 nsec in delay. Precision is estimated at a few parts in 105. This approach is generally related to prior work on fiber dispersion characterization by interferometry.1,2
