Abstract
There has recently been a great deal of interest in ultrashort optical pulse generation using semiconductor diode lasers. To generate Fourier transform-limited or coherent optical pulses with temporally smooth profiles, mode-locking1 or injection-locking2 methods were employed. However, these schemes require relatively complex configuration along with careful alignment and control. In this paper, we report for the first time the generation of bandwidth-limited single-mode picosecond optical pulses from a distributed-feedback (DFB) InGaAsP laser employing a practically simple method of highly rf modulation.
