Abstract

Currently, many attractive experiments for a high-bit-rate optical transmission system have been reported with a single-mode optical fiber longer than 100 km.1,2 To diagnose loss and splicing characteristics of such a long transmission line, optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is a very powerful method.3 This technique is based on analyzing backward Rayleigh scattered light which is exponentially decaying along a fiber. For single-mode fibers, the backscattered power level is 10–15 dB below that of a multimode fiber. From this point of view, a high-power optical source,4 a low-noise detector,5 and an efficient capturing technique for the backscattered light4 are required for an ultralong fault location system for single-mode fibers.
