Abstract

Saturation of absorption and relaxation processes in excited states of tetrahedral Cr4+ in garnets and forsterite and Co2+ in GSGG are investigated. An upper limit for intra 3T2 state vibrational relaxation time and absorption cross section for 3A2-3T2 transition of tetrahedral Cr4+ and nonradiative life-time of 4T1 (4P) and 4T1(4F) excited states of Co2+ are estimated. Q-switched and ultrashort pulses are realized in neodymium lasers using chromium doped crystals as the saturable absorbers .
