Abstract

The optical transmittance, reflectance, and absorptance of thin metallic films with photon energies from 0 to 4 eV are calculated by considering the anomalous skin effect and electron scattering at the film boundaries. A maximum transmittance can be predicted to occur at 3.5 eV for gold films; this is far below the plasmon oscillating frequency. A narrow-band rejection filter can be constructed from metal–dielectric multilayers with a rejection ratio of 48.5 for a 10-layer structure.
