Abstract

We analytically study, in the homogenization regime, the dispersive and transmission properties of periodic multilayer arrays of subwavelength metal particles embedded in a dielectric medium. Far from the intrinsic plasmonic resonance of the individual nanoparticles, these structures behave similarly to conventional Bragg reflectors. At the plasmonic resonance, a different type of Bragg gap is formed with peculiar dispersive and tunneling properties.
