Physical Interpretation of the Orientation Phenomenon of the Small Molecules in a Polymeric Matrix (Model of Polarizability)

Abstract

The linear UV dichroism was studied for 18 compounds encased in stretched polyethylene (PE) films and analyzed to establish the main physical factor responsible for molecular orientation. When the "shape-model" and "polarizability-model" were compared, it was found that polarizability is a more important factor than the shape of molecules. The specific relative orientation between small molecules and polymer chains is determined by the minimum in the interaction energy, i.e., the balance of repulsive and attractive forces.
