Abstract

The United States Customs Service is required to differentiate coated, impregnated, and uncoated printing papers. Papers of various construction are classified for import duty at different rates. Classical paper chemistry techniques have helped in resolving these different types of papers. The availability of infrared spectrometers and attenuated total reflectance devices (ATR) offered an interesting alternative to classical paper chemistry.
