Abstract
Many heavy metals can be chelated with ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (1-pyrrolidinecarbodithioic acid ammonium salt) and extracted into an organic solvent for determination by atomic absorption flame spectrophotometry. Methyl iso-butyl ketone (4-methyl-2-pentanone) was found to be a satisfactory solvent for this procedure. Extraction from a large volume of sample solution into a small volume of ketone will concentrate the element being determined and the sensitivity of the determination will thereby be greatly increased. This is an important factor in analyses for micronutrients in biological samples or trace elements in other materials.
