Abstract

In a recent note, Slavin considered the errors arising in densitometer readings quantitatively in terms of spectral energy. The effect of these errors in limiting the useful range of the densitometer scale was also demonstrated. For spectral-line-intensity measurements to have a coefficient of variation (CV) less than 2%, Slavin showed that the scale range used must be restricted to between 8.5%–63% transmittance. To obtain a CV of less than 3%, the scale range used must be between 6.3% and 75% transmittance. The consequent reduction in the concentration range covered by a method was also considered.
